Swedish Somali Business Program – Business Advisor

Forum Syd is a civil society member organisation that works with development issues from a rights-based perspective. Our vision is “a just and sustainable world where all people have the power to effect change”. We work with sub-granting and capacity building of partner organisations around the world, on issues relating to democracy and human rights, gender equality, and environment and climate change. We also mediate grants from Sida (the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency) to Swedish organisations cooperating with local partners in 70 countries. We have offices in Sweden, Belarus, Cambodia, Colombia, Kenya and Somalia.


Forum Syd implements the Swedish-Somali Business Program (SSBP) with Business Sweden as its main partner. As a part of the Swedish Government´s Development Cooperation strategy for Somalia, the ultimate goal of the SSBP is employment creation and increase of income for those economically active in Somalia, contributing to livelihood improvement and human security across the country with a focus on young people 18-35 years, and with a particular focus on women in this age group.

Forum Syd is now looking for an SSBP Business Advisor for our office in Somalia – with placement in either Hargeisa, Garowe or Mogadishu. This is a temporary full-time (100%) position for six months, with the possibility of an extension, starting in early January 2019.

Areas of responsibility

 Coordinate SSBP outreach activities in all regions of Somalia

 Conduct SSBP monitoring activities in all regions of Somalia

 Develop, design and implement Business Development trainings for SSBP participants in all regions of Somalia

 Keep in close communication with SSBP participants in all regions of Somalia and advise them on business development as necessary

 Support the assessment of Business Plans as part of applications

 Participate in conferences, meetings and other events, representing SSBP in all regions of Somalia

 Collect information on the latest laws and policies relating to the private sector in all regions of Somalia

 Support the SSBP Team Leader and Country Manager in other activities as needed.

 Occasional travel to Kenya and Sweden for meetings as needed.

Qualifications required

 BA in Business administration (MA an advantage)

 Fluent in written and spoken English and Somali (Swedish an advantage)

 Experience in the private sector, preferably as manager or advisor

 Solid experience in developing business plans

 Very good knowledge of the private sector and business development in all regions of Somalia

 Experience of ‘business for development’ and knowledge of sustainability issues

 Ability to develop and implement effective training programs, workshops and other capacity development activities

 Exceptional interpersonal skills, a collaborative style, and the ability to communicate effectively with all kinds of groups

 Ability to work both independently and as part of teams

 Demonstrated initiative and the ability to keep deadlines

 Well-organised with attention to detail

 Proficient in Microsoft Office software.

 Experience working for an international NGO preferred
