ORGANIZATIONAL CONTEXT.

The English, Oromo, and Amharic speaking Interpreter will work under the direct supervision of the Associate Eligibility Officer and report to the Protection Officer. S/he will be required to help facilitate Refugee Status Determination and Resettlement interviews with Ethiopian asylum seekers and refugees. S/he will also provide other interpretation and translation assistance as required. The Interpreter will be based in Hargeisa and will be a member of the UNHCR Hargeisa Protection Unit.

Accountability

·         Facilitation of effective communication between UNHCR staff and persons of concern to UNHCR

 

Responsibility

·         Provide accurate and high quality oral and written interpretation from English into Oromo and Amharic, and vice versa during registration, refugee status determination interviews, resettlement interviews and counselling sessions;

·         Provide translations of informal and formal correspondence from English to Oromo and Amharic and vice versa;

·         Consistently review the rules of interpreting in a refugee context (Ethics and Interpreter's tool kit) and adhere to the UNHCR code of conduct to maintain and ensure the highest degree of integrity;

·         Request feedback of the interpretation session;

·         Participate in the development and improvement of any interpretation tool kits (glossary, etc.);

·         When needed, assist the office in interpretation for field activities including but not limited to meeting with persons of concern, community management structure, participatory assessment, world refugee day and other related events.

·         Participate in yearly performance appraisal reviews and monthly interpreter meetings;

·         Perform other duties as required.

 

Authority

·         Report any issues faced while interpreting.

 

ESSENTIAL MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE REQUIRED.

·         Completion of Secondary education with relevant training

·         Minimum 3 years of previous job experience relevant to the function

·         Fluency in written and spoken English, Oromo and Amharic is essential. Other language skills (particularly Somali) will be an asset.

 

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS & COMPETENCIES.

·         Good communication and computer skills

·         Excellent translation and interpretation skills
