Background**

The Danish Refugee Council (DRC) is an independent, non-profit organization (NGO), founded on the basis of humanitarian principles, and human rights based approach, to secure the protection of refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs), and to promoting long term solutions to the problems of forced displacement. Danish Demining Group (DDG) is a specialized unit within DRC which implements mine action and armed violence reduction (AVR) programmes. DDG’s mandate is ‘to create a safe environment free from armed violence and the remnants of conflict’, and DDG does this via a programmatic focus on four key sectors: Security Systems Reform, Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW) management, Mine Action and Conflict Management

Overall purpose of the role:

The purpose of this is position is to organize educational and recreational activities for children at the CFS, to ensure the children’s safe interaction and play, to documents the children’s attendance, to report key output of the activities conducted in the CFS to the Protection officers and alert DRC in case of noted protection concerns for children attending the CFS in Mogadishu.

Responsibilities:**

  • Provide basic literacy and numbers skills for the Child at the Child Friendly Space (CFS) in Mogadishu
  • Organize small games entertainment session for the children at CFS
  • Provide counseling and mentoring to children at the CFS
  • Provide best practice of personal Hygiene and Sanitation session to the children at child friendly space.
  • Undertake regular daily attendance of the children at the center;
  • Evaluate Children at CFS based on lessons learnt on monthly basis;
  • Conduct six days of painting per week working from morning to afternoon with children.
  • Prepare and submit weekly/monthly report to the Mogadishu protection officer
  • To conduct site visits, monitor developments, and draft reports in line with protection officer
  • Ensure good relations between the host communities, authorities, and DRC in relation to reintegration activities
  • To run the centers and support identification of cases that require referral for medical and more complex PSS support
  • Lead and take part distribution of Child kits and dignity kits to the children in the center
  • Conduct campaigns to inform communities on available services and use the child friendly space for community mobilization and information sharing centers.
  • Prepare case plan, follow up, referral to legal, safe house or alternative care, and referral to medical services where treatment and transportation.
  • Create comprehensive information management in all locations to monitor and respond to GBV and CP incidents, allow comprehensive follow up, and report on trends to enact more community based prevention responses and awareness raising
  • Monitor, verify and document returnees’ human rights violations and protection risks
  • Produces protection focused reports and follows-up on red flag protection-related issues;
  • Produce weekly reports on activities and protection concerns such children identified.
  • Refer cases with protection concerns to the case worker/community service worker, to ensure their protection needs are addressed.
  • Identify and document protection concerns among returnees and when deemed necessary, provide direct personalized assistance to vulnerable families.
  • Track and document general displacement issues in areas of child friendly space in Mogadishu.
  • Present progress reports on daily and weekly basis or as may be decided by supervisor.
  • Support the Protection Information Management Officer in data entry and analysis.
  • Maintain and strengthen close working relationship with returnees, host community, religious/ community leaders and local authority.
  • Support protection officer in conducting assessments on a needs basis.
  • Conduct other duties as assigned by supervisors

Education & Qualification:**

  • Diploma in social development, education and public heath as well as related qualification in Protection or Children Rights.
  • Experience, preferably a minimum of 1 years, in formal education and social development.
  • Experience in working with children and community;
  • Ability to work well under pressure and in adverse conditions;
  • Fluent in written and spoken Somali languages and basic English skills are desirable;
  • Commitment to children rights and child protection.
  • Good cooperation skills, ability to work well independently and in a team;
  • Good problem solving and social skills and creative, to think of alternative solutions;
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal and communications skills;
  • Willing to work extra hours and available at the weekend for emergency cases.
  • Experience in protection monitoring and reporting
  • Honest, hardworking and independent

Conditions

Availability: 20th May, 2019

Duty station: Mogadishu

Reporting to: Protection Team Leader

Duration: 8 months with possibility extensions
