NRC has been active in Somalia since 2004 with four area offices in Kismayo, Mogadishu, Garowe and  Hargeisa, providing protection and humanitarian assistance to refugees, internally displaced persons and returnees in Somaliland, Puntland, South Central and Jubbaland regions. NRC offers a comprehensive response for returnees and IDPs of high need, addressing their food security, livelihood, shelter, education, ICLA, and water, hygiene and sanitation needs and also responding to emergencies through NRC’s five core competences; Shelter, Education, Food Security and Livelihoods, WASH and Information, Counselling and Legal Assistance (ICLA).

The Finance Assistant is responsible for day-to-day financial accounting tasks in Somalia Country office in Mogadishu.

Job description:

The following is a brief description of the role:

  • Adhere to NRC policies, tools, handbooks and guidelines
  • Assist with the implementation of the support function portfolio according to plan of action
  • Prepare and develop status reports as required by management
  • Ensure proper filing of documents
  • Promote and share ideas for improvement of the support function

Specific responsibilities

  • Ensure that cash requested are duly approved before release of the payments and make follow-up for the liquidations of the advances.
  • Ensure that proper record of cash vouchers of both cash and bank payments are properly maintained at all times
  • Prepare and arrange for bank withdrawals and transfers and present for verification
  • Collection of Deposit slips from Banks after payments are done
  • Ensure that the cash boxes for both cash and cheque payments are updated on daily basis so as to have correct balances at any given time.
  • Ensure that the data for posting is well organized in the correct post back format for ease of posting
  • Ensure that regular cash counts are done properly.
  • Maintenance of the proper filing system for finance records and documents
  • Responsible for the administration and archiving of NRC Somalia finance documents.
  • Perform cash counts and bank reconciliations for review by the Finance Officer or any other delegated person
  • Scan all Country office Financial documents and present to the Compliance coordinator for review.
  • Support the Compliance Finance Coordinator in preparation, during and after audits.
  • Perform any other duties as and when required.


  • Diploma in Business Administration, Commerce, Finance or Accounting
  • Minimum of 2years relevant experience
  • Experience from working with accounting in a humanitarian/recovery context
  • Previous experience from working in complex and volatile contexts
  • Documented results related to the position’s responsibilities
  • Knowledge about own skills/profile
  • Some knowledge of English

Context related skills, knowledge and experience (shall be adapted to the specific position):
