Our client is a division of the OROLSI in the Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO). our client is mandated by the UNGA (RES/68/72) to ensure an effective, proactive and coordinated response to the problem posed by a wide range of explosive hazards. Legislative mandates also recognize our client technical expertise in responding to threats posed by unsecured and unsafe conventional weapons and ammunition stockpiles. As an office within DPKO, our client supports peacekeeping and special political missions in accordance with Security Council mandates.

Our client provides explosive hazard management capacities, including mitigation, as part of a logistical support package. Non-lethal tactical advice and analysis is delivered by our client technical advisers located in Section Headquarters and at Force Headquarters, who support the planning and operations. Our client support includes both enabling (“operate in spite of IEDs”) and response (“defeat the device”). Our client also supports the Federal Government of Somalia, including the Somali Police Force, Somali Explosive Management Authority and National Security Adviser.


Role objective:

The Peace and Security Cluster (PSC) supports and facilitates the work of our client, other UN partners and Governments in some 18 countries and territories affected by explosive-hazards. The PSC provides specialized project management services to efficiently support our client in delivering essential work on the ground in emergency, post-conflict and peacekeeping environments with the aim of promoting peace and security, protecting civilians and ensuring long lasting human security.

Expected output:

The Security Officer – Convoy Coordinator will work under the guidance and supervision of our client in Somalia Head of Security. S/he will provide a comprehensive range of specialized and administrative support services for the management of security and safety operations. The Security Officer promotes a client-oriented approach consistent with our client's rules and regulations and UN Security Management System regulations.

The incumbent is responsible for the following duties and responsibilities:

  • Maintain up to date knowledge of events relating to the security and political environment in Somalia;
  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive knowledge of the operational environment, including the scope and scale of our client's operations;
  • Conduct field security and risk assessments in close coordination with UNDSS in support of mine action and explosive management related activities;
  • Maintain and update Security SOPs and ensure our client's personnel and compounds are in compliance;
  • Maintain the our client's warden system to ensure accountability for all staff in the event of a security emergency.
  • Prepare security situation reports and provide security briefings as and when required.
  • Attend Security Management Team (SMT) meetings and other working groups on behalf of our client Security.
  • Maintaining continual liaison with UNDSS, Host Government and other actors through regular inter-agency consultations, networking, mutual support, and information sharing;
  • Prepare and conduct our client road/field missions within Mogadishu and Somalia in support of our client's programme activities;
  • Conduct mission related / tactical training for drivers and staff;
  • Provide security advice to staff in an emergency situation, ensure the appropriate level of security measures to support programme delivery, staff safety and security of organization property;
  • Assist the Head of Security with establishing policies, plans and procedures for crisis situations and emergencies;
  • Assist in the recruitment, training and supervision of local security officers; and
  • Any other duties as assigned by the Head of Security.

Project reporting: This role reports to the Head of Security

Team management: This role does not have team management responsibility.



§ Bachelor's degree in With a minimum of 7 years of relevant experience is an advantage. and/or Master's degree in With a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience.

Work experience:

§ Minimum of 5 years of demonstrable relevant Security experience.

Geographical experience:

§ Minimum of 1 years of experience in Africa (essential) and/or Middle East ().


§ Fluency in English is essential.

Key competencies:


  • An advanced university degree (Masters’ or Equivalent) with a focus on security management and or related disciplines with 5 years of relevant work experience; Or
  • First level university degree (BA or equivalent) with a focus on security management and/or related disciplines with 7 years of relevant work experience.
  • High school diploma with a combination of relevant professional security training and 11 years of experience may be accepted in lieu of a formal degree.


  • Within the years of experience, at least 5 years should have been in the sphere of international security management, law enforcement and/or military experience is required.
  • Experience in a similar operating environment such as Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan, Libya or Somalia in a similar position/capacity is required.
  • Prior Somalia experience, security training experience is desired.
  • Internationally recognized driving licence is required.


  • Fluency in English (spoken, written and reading) is required;
  • Knowledge of a second UN language is desired.
