Organizational Setting

Under the overall guidance of the UNFPA Representative/Head of Office (Mogadishu) and under the technical guidance of the Communication/Partnership/Donor Relations Specialist, the Communications Analyst will work in close collaboration with programme and project staff and support the formulation and implementation of the communications and advocacy strategies at the country level to increase the standing and awareness of UNFPA with partners, the media and the public. The Communications Officer will support the communication component of Peace Building Fund project that promote decision making and inclusion of youth voices in the peace and state building process in Somalia.

Main Tasks and Responsibilities

a) Summary of Key Functions:

  • Support the implementation of the country office communications strategy;
  • Support the consolidation and packaging of information to better communicate the impact of UNFPA's work to partners, media and beneficiaries;
  • Support public information management, including report launches and special public events, awareness and information campaigns, outreach for programmes and projects, the management of media relations, and website content development;
  • Ensure facilitation of knowledge building and management;
  • Set up and maintain an information database and a photo library that can be accessed by programme and project staff to better communicate the work UNFPA does through their projects;
  • Support the consolidation and packaging of information to better communicate the impact of UNFPA's work to partners, media and beneficiaries;
  • Assist in the production of short videos that clearly illustrate the work of UNFPA in different project/thematic areas;
  • Advise field staff on communication aspects of their projects/programmes and guide them in developing clear messages and identifying appropriate channels of communication;
  • Contribute to the regular consolidation of reports highlighting achievements, results and impact;
  • Organize the creation, updating and dissemination of regionally-specific products such as leaflets and publications to appropriate recipients/audience;
  • Organize and support publicity, advocacy, knowledge-sharing and promotional opportunities in support of project activities/milestones in the region;
  • Support the Communication/Partnership/Donor Relations Specialist to conduct basic communication training for field staff;
  • Support public information management including design and rollout of awareness and information campaigns, outreach for programmes and projects, report launches and special public events; management of media relations, and website content development.

Report launches, special and regular public events and campaigns

  • With support from the Communication/Partnership/Donor Relations Specialist, oversee the dissemination of corporate advocacy materials for launching flagship initiatives and publications. This includes media management before, during and after key supporting events;
  • Support local implementation of joint UN information campaigns including logistical organization and media management.

Outreach

  • Prepare and support dissemination of public information materials (e.g. donor bulletins, annual reports, information leaflets) to donors, stakeholders, partners and beneficiaries, where appropriate, to support projects/priority UNFPA activities;
  • Develop plans to more effectively reach out to the Somali audience, in line with the CO's communication strategy. This may include organizing radio debates, press briefings, book launches, round tables discussions;
  • Organize search for talent among young people who can produce blog articles, web TV series and radio podcasts for the peace building fund project;
  • Assist in the organization of information sessions with target audiences on specific topics to increase awareness of the work of UNFPA. This may include screenings of videos produced.

Media management

  • Support the Communication/Partnership/Donor Relations Specialist in the drafting of press releases and media advisories to support key launches, milestones and events;
  • Manage media events;
  • Play an active role in supporting UN Information Group media events, such as media days, briefings and press conferences in order to improve relationship between UN and local media

Website content development

  • Contribute content for the country office website through writing human interest stories (news items, features), taking photographs, and recording short videos (flipcam) on UNFPA's work with communities;
  • Contribute strategic ideas for story themes, photo journals, etc.

Knowledge building and management

  • Identification and synthesis of best practices and lessons learned directly linked to programme country goals and activities. Using this information, write success stories which can be used for Donor Bulletins, UNFPA Somalia website, key public information materials including the Annual Report;
  • Sound contributions to knowledge networks and communities of practice including corporate communications repositories and teamworks;
  • Assisting the Communication/Partnership/Donor Relations Specialist with the organization and conduct of training and workshops on communications for development as appropriate.

Work Relations

Internal contacts include the Deputy Representative the CO's programme/technical team. External contacts include other UN agencies in country, and counterparts and partners in Country programme activities, including international NGOs, experts etc.

Qualifications and Experience

Education:

Master's Degree in political and economic sciences, sociology, law, international relations, communications, or related field. A Bachelor's degree in similar fields with 4 years' experience will be accepted.

Knowledge and Experience:

At least two years' relevant professional work experience in communications and public relations if holder of a Masters' degree. At least three years' relevant work experience if holder of a Bachelor's degree.

Experience working for a development or humanitarian organization an asset.

Experience in video, print production and photography is desirable. Experience in the usage of computers and office software packages (MS Word, Excel, etc.) essential.

Experience in graphic designing is an asset.;

Languages:

Fluency in English both spoken and written is a must. Knowledge of Somali language is desirable.
